Discussion of the master's thesis of the student "Othman Mhede Dawood"

The public discussion took place for the master’s student (Othman Mhede Dawood) Department of Applied Geology- University of Anbar on Sunday 3/11/2024 in Ibn Sina Hall. for his tagged thesis:

" Facies Analysis of the Euphrates Formation Outcrops in Bahar Al-Najaf Area, Southwestern Iraq"

The discussion committee consisted of:

Prof. Dr. Amer Saadi Saleh -University of Anbar - College of Science- President
Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdul Hamid Abd Mohammed -University of Anbar - College of Sciences - Member
Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Sattam Abbas -University of Al-Karkh for Science - Member
Assist. Prof. Dr. Salam Obaid Ibrahim - University of Anbar - College of Sciences - member and supervisor

The study aims to analyze sedimentary facies within the Euphrates Formation, investigate diagenetic processes through carbonate rock textures, and estimate the depositional environments. Additionally, it seeks to enhance understanding of the formation's history and the environmental conditions during its development. Overall, the research will provide insights into the geological history and depositional dynamics of the region.

The study observed various types of primary and secondary facies, including Lime Mudstone, Wack stone, Wack-Pickstone, Pickstone, and Grain stone. Several important diagenetic processes for the Euphrates Formation were identified, such as dolomitization, neomorphism, recrystallization, cementation, dissolution, various types of porosity, micritization, and compaction. The depositional environment of the formation was inferred to be a carbonate platform ranging from protected lagoons to reefs, reflecting the impact of sea-level changes on the development of the formation and its ancient environmental conditions
