The Women's Affairs Unit at the College of Science organized a symposium entitled "Iraqi Women as Partners in Peacebuilding and Decision-Making: Steps Towards Implementing UN Resolution 1325" on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
The symposium, delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Anwar Khawam Alwan, a lecturer in the Department of Applied Geology, and Assistant Lecturer Hanan Abdul Qader Abdul-Ilah, focused on the importance of Resolution 1325 in enhancing the role of women in peace and security issues. She noted that the resolution has helped women overcome challenges, despite a significant "awareness gap" in the Arab world regarding its provisions. The resolution also called on member states to increase women's representation in decision-making and protect them from violence and discrimination. It emphasized the need to integrate gender into all UN systems and reports. This symposium is part of the Third National Plan for Women, Peace, and Security, under the protection and prevention pillar in paragraph 6 on UN Resolution 1325 and how to achieve its objectives.
