Specialized Workshop for Postgraduate Students on “Academic Integrity and Combating Plagiarism”
As part of its commitment to promoting research ethics and ensuring the originality of academic output, the College of Science organized a specialized scientific workshop for postgraduate students on Sunday, 16 November 2025, at Ibn Sina Hall. The workshop was entitled:
**“Plagiarism: Meaning, Types, Academic Integrity, and How to Reduce Plagiarism”**
(*What Does Plagiarism Mean: Academic Honesty, Plagiarism, and Creation – Detecting and Reducing Plagiarism*)
The workshop lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Mohammed Abdul Karim Talak, a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry, who highlighted the ethical and legal dimensions of plagiarism. He reviewed its various forms, ranging from verbatim copying to partial appropriation without proper citation. Dr. Mohammed Abdul Karim also provided practical and detailed guidance on best practices for ensuring academic integrity, including the correct use of citation and referencing techniques to reduce plagiarism rates in research papers and theses, with particular emphasis on the importance of originality and creative academic writing.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness of research ethics and standards of academic integrity, equip postgraduate students with proper citation and referencing skills, and introduce them to plagiarism detection mechanisms and effective strategies for avoiding plagiarism in academic work.
This workshop is part of a series of guidance programs offered by the College to postgraduate students, with the goal of graduating researchers who adhere to international standards of quality, integrity, and originality in scientific research.
