Scientific workshop "The dangerous environmental effects of plastic waste"
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Center at the University Presidency and the College of Engineering, and in the presence of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Salman Obaid, Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, organized an important scientific workshop on Monday, December 9, 2024, in Jabir bin Hayyan Hall, which addressed the dangerous environmental effects of plastic waste. The lecture was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Sattar Salem Ibrahim, Assistant Professor Dr. Wahran Munim Saud, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ibtihal Ahmed Mawloud. During the lecture, the lecturers reviewed the dimensions of the environmental problem resulting from the accumulation of plastic waste, and its destructive effects on the marine and terrestrial environment, wildlife, and human health. The lecturers focused on the damage caused by plastic waste, which includes environmental pollution and the destruction of ecosystems, and the impact on public health, as harmful chemicals leak from plastic into food and water, posing a risk to human health and negatively affecting biodiversity and soil and water pollution, and posing a direct threat to wildlife and marine life. The lecturers did not limit themselves to presenting the problem, but rather presented a set of proposed solutions to reduce the effects of plastic waste, which include community awareness, encouraging recycling, and replacing plastic with environmentally friendly materials.
