From Lecture Halls to Oil Fields: Applied Geology Students Hosted by the First Seismic Crew

As part of its efforts to strengthen practical training and link academic curricula with the labor market, the Department of Applied Geology at the College of Science organized a scientific field visit to the First Seismic Crew of the Oil Exploration Company in the Dhra‘ Dijlah area.

The visit witnessed active participation by fourth-year undergraduate students and postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD), under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr. Ali Mishal Abd, Head of the Department of Applied Geology, and Lecturer Nizar Zaidan Khalaf, with hosting support from Prof. Dr. Abd Saleh Fayadh.

The tour aimed to provide students with hands-on exposure to operational practices in the oil sector. It included an overview of the seismic crew’s work program and its role in exploration activities, an explanation of modern seismic techniques used in hydrocarbon prospecting, and a close look at the nature of fieldwork. The visit also highlighted the pivotal role of geological studies in supporting the national economy.

This initiative aligns with the department’s plan to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and field applications, thereby enhancing students’ scientific competence and preparing a new generation of geologists qualified to work efficiently in the oil industry.
