The study evaluated occupational exposure to lead and cadmium among petroleum- and industrial-sector workers in the Fallujah Industrial District, Al-Anbar Governorate. The metals were measured in whole blood, scalp hair, and fingernails after acid digestion using AAS, then compared with a non-exposed control group to determine the workplace contribution to metal burden.
The results showed higher lead and cadmium levels in all exposed groups than in the control group across blood, hair, and nails. Car body repairmen had the highest lead burden, especially in hair and nails, while cadmium was notably elevated among car body repairmen and auto electricians. Blood reflected recent exposure, whereas hair and nails indicated long-term accumulation.
