The Knight Steps Down, but His Legacy Endures: Tears of Loyalty and Applause of Gratitude in Farewell to “the Father and Mentor,” Prof. Dr. Wajeeh Younis Al-Ani
In exceptional moments where pride intertwined with the bittersweet emotions of farewell, and along the corridors of the Department of Chemistry that have echoed his voice for years, the College of Science held a solemn tribute ceremony today in honor of the distinguished scholar, Professor Dr. Wajeeh Younis Al-Ani, on the occasion of his retirement after decades of dedicated service.
The ceremony, marked by sincere emotions and tearful expressions of appreciation, was led by the Dean of the College of Science, in the presence of the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs and the Head of the Department of Chemistry. It was not merely an administrative procedure, but rather a heartfelt family gathering where colleagues and generations of students came together to say “thank you” to a man who was a father figure before he was a professor.
In a deeply moving scene, attendees stood in respect and admiration for a scholar who devoted the prime of his life to laboratories and lecture halls. In his speech, the Dean emphasized that “retirement marks the end of official duty, but not the end of knowledge and mentorship,” describing Dr. Wajeeh as a scientific beacon who will continue to illuminate the paths of researchers. The ceremony also featured spontaneous remarks from colleagues and students, recalling his noble character, humility, and unwavering paternal care.
In his own emotional address, at times overcome with feeling, Professor Dr. Wajeeh Younis Al-Ani expressed his profound gratitude for the thoughtful gesture from the College Deanship, colleagues, and students. He described the farewell as a “medal of honor” concluding his professional journey, affirming that retirement from administrative duties would not prevent him from maintaining academic ties with the college he considers his second home and with his students, whom he regards as his own children.
